We caught up with Ms. Gabbie Raute, exhibitor of the Reserve Grand Champion Commercial Ewe at the 2024 NAILE. Learn a little more about Gabbie below!
What was your favorite thing about the show?
My favorite thing about the commercial ewe show at NAILE was how seamlessly everything ran. The event stayed right on schedule throughout the day, and what really stood out to me was how much focus was placed on the kids. It was an experience that truly revolved around the participants, and that made it even more special
What is one experience in the ring you will never forget?
One moment I’ll never forget was winning Grand Champion Market Lamb at Reno. Seeing the pride on my aunt’s face was truly unforgettable. It’s a memory I often turn to when I need a pick-me-up. The handshake itself was incredible, but what really moved me was the overwhelming sense of pride from my family and role models. Their joy for me was even more meaningful than the win itself.
What is one thing you try to not take for granted while showing?
I try to never take for granted the incredible support I have from my family and my team. I’m fortunate to have a dedicated group of people by my side, always ready to help. My aunt Kristy Pingel, my sisters Sam and Alex, and Dave and Matt Williams have been my constants, whether it’s assisting ringside or preparing the sheep while I’m in the show ring. And I’m equally grateful to the people who show for my aunt, who have consistently been there to lend a hand. I make sure to always thank them and let them know how much their help means to me.
If you had to use one word to describe the people supporting you, what would it be?
Choosing just one word to describe the people who help me is tough because they are so many things to me. But the first word that comes to mind is ‘encouraging.’ They consistently offer support, celebrate my successes, and, when things don’t go as planned, they help me learn from my mistakes. Their encouragement is what truly drives me forward.
If you could pick another species to show, what would it be? Why?
Choosing another species to show was an easy decision for me—I also show goats during the summer. It’s so much fun to explore the differences and similarities between showing sheep and goats. Plus, I enjoy working with Dave Williams, who was the one who got me started with goat showing in the first place.
