We caught up with Ms. Sawyer Phipps, exhibitor of the Supreme Champion Breeding Ewe at the 2024 Colorado State Fair. Learn a little more about Sawyer below!
What is one thing you try to do that sets you apart?
Inside the ring, my friends would say it’s my poofy ponytail and big earrings. I like to think it’s my ability to work smoothly with my lamb/goat and how I try to never give the judge a bad look.
Outside the ring, I love to be an encourager and display good sportsmanship. This is a competitive sport and we all wanna win, but it’s a lot more fun when we cheer each other on vs tear each other down.
What was the hardest thing you had to learn about showing sheep?
In my opinion, sheep is the hardest specie to show. When I’m spending time in front of the mirror, it’s amazing how very small changes in body position/pressure can make a big difference in a sheep’s appearance – good or bad! Ha! Every sheep has to be shown just a little bit different to highlight their strengths and hide their weaknesses.
Who has helped you the most as a showman?
My dad, hands down. He’s always wishing he could enter Round Robin and Master Showman contests himself – ha! He just has a knack for making one look good with (what appears to be) very little effort, moving and positioning it with finesse…I hope I am following closely in his footsteps!
