We caught up with Ms. Natalie Wilfong, exhibitor of the Supreme Champion Ewe at the 2024 California State Fair. Learn a little more about Natalie below!
What is one thing you try to do that sets you apart?
Win or lose, I always try to learn something and take something positive away from every experience showing sheep. I try to keep an open mind and be positive, even when things don’t go my way.
What was the hardest thing you had to learn about showing sheep?
Judging is one person’s opinion on one day and each judge is going to look at your animal a different way. You can win one weekend and be middle of the class the next. You just never know, but this has taught me that as long as I do everything I can to make my sheep look their very best, I can feel good about that no matter what.
Who has helped you the most as a showman?
When I started showing livestock in 4-H, I was convinced that showing goats was all I wanted to do. With some encouragement, Candy Ellis of Flying Fs Livestock convinced me to start showing sheep, promising me that I would love it. Well, she was right! Showing sheep is now my passion, especially Southdowns! She has taught me how to properly feed and exercise my sheep and how to get them ready for shows.
