Layne Allen

We caught up with Ms. Layne Allen, exhibitor of the Supreme Champion Breeding Ewe  at the 2024 Oklahoma Youth Expo. Learn a little more about Layne below!

Tell us a little about your champion:
Her name is Princess Michelle. She is a ewe lamb we raised from birth!

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned while showing animals?
I’ve learned that because I am small, I have had to work harder and longer to get my sheep where I can get them shown!

Do you have any special tricks for getting stubborn animals to cooperate?
I am constantly told to “put my hands in the jaw.” I think that is what benefits me the most.

What’s your favorite memory involving your animals?
Getting to win my first big banner with Princess Michelle!!

How do you prepare your animals both physically and mentally for the shows?
It takes a lot of work with them all throughout the year. One thing my Mom always tells us is how important handwalking is. So we spend lots of time doing that, and going down different paths that will prepare them for show day.

What’s the most challenging aspect of showing livestock, and how do you overcome it?
When you have a stubborn one that doesn’t want to cooperate. It takes me a lot of practice to get them through it.

Who inspired you to become the showman you are today?
My Mom and Dad!

Do you name your animals? If so, what’s the most interesting name you have given?
Yes absolutely! Jumbo!

If your lamb had its own pump-up song, what would it be?
America’s Sweetheart!

What’s the most unexpected blooper you’ve experienced during a show?
I tripped and fell in the grand drive at my district show, twice over my jeans. That was really embarrassing!!
