We caught up with Mr. Hudson Franklin, exhibitor of the Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2024 American Royal. Learn a little more about Hudson below!
What was your favorite thing about the show?
Truly, just getting to compete at this level with my family right there with me. The American Royal is a big deal, so it’s amazing to put our hard work and hours spent at the barn to the test and have it really count for something.
What is one experience in the ring you will never forget?
The Royal Elite Drive is definitely something special. The atmosphere and the way they showcase the winners from all species is incredible. One of the best parts was watching my buddy Madden win Grand Champion goat in the ring right next to me
What is one thing you try to not take for granted while showing?
One thing I try not to take for granted while showing is the time I get to spend with my family. My parents put in the work just like I do, and they’re right there with me through every step, especially my dad, who’s taught me so much about showing and raising good stock. The support and memories we make together mean everything.
If you had to use one word to describe the people supporting you, what would it be?
If I had to use one word to describe the people supporting me, it would be motivation. It’s not just my mom and dad who are always there; it’s my entire stock show family—friends, mentors, and everyone who supports, encourages, and genuinely wants to see me succeed. They’re always cheering me on, no matter what.
If you had to pick a favorite judge, who would it be and why?
Hands down, my dad. He only recently started judging shows again, but at home, we spend a lot of time in the barn talking about our lambs—their good and bad traits, what they need to improve, which ones are best suited for each show, and why. I’ve already learned so much from him, and I hope to develop the same eye for a good one and the fitting skills he has someday.
Do you enjoy doing showmanship? Why or why not?
While I’ve competed and done well in showmanship, and I respect those who excel and win, it’s honestly not my favorite. It’s not that I don’t see its value, but showmanship often happens the day before the market show, and I’d rather focus on getting my lamb ready to be competitive for the big show.
If you could pick another species to show, what would it be? Why?
The easy answer would be goats, since I show them sometimes, and they’re the most like lambs. But, I’d have to go with steers. Their quality and build always impress me, especially seeing how they’re presented and fitted at hair shows. I can only imagine the hours of work that goes into making them look like the steers I saw at The Royal, but it’d be really cool to learn those skills.
