Carson Schaeffer

We caught up with Mr. Carson Schaeffer exhibitor of the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2024 San Antonio Stock Show. Learn a little more about Carson below!

Tell us a little about your champion:
My lamb was bred by Parker Saum and placed by Tyler Jenkins. I have enjoyed showing him all year at Nationals and jackpots. He won numerous shows over the summer, and he was 3rd overall in his division at the American Royal.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned while showing animals?
Every lamb in our barn is different so you really have to know how to make adjustments to show them and make them look their best. Also, leg hair is a lot of work!

Do you have any special tricks for getting stubborn animals to cooperate?
It takes a lot of extra time working with them without getting frustrated because they can sense everything.

What’s your favorite memory involving your animals?
Having the opportunity to travel to National shows with my family is always a favorite memory every year.

How do you prepare your animals both physically and mentally for the shows?
Preparing the animals physically consists of tracking, treadmilling, setting them up daily, and working leg hair. Mentally preparing the sheep would be just getting them used to the way I handle them.

What’s the most challenging aspect of showing livestock, and how do you overcome it?
I would say the most challenging thing is being nervous when stepping into the ring. I spend a lot of time in prayer before I go in the ring and try to remember that I want to honor God in everything I do. That helps me to be calm.

Who inspired you to become the showman you are today?
My big brother, Tanner. He has spent many hours in the barn coaching me and encouraging me. He gives me the confidence I need and he is patient with me. He was a good showman.

Do you name your animals? If so, what’s the most interesting name you have given?
We used to when we were younger, but not so much anymore unless they have something that stands out about them.

If your lamb had its own pump-up song, what would it be?
Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top

What’s the most unexpected blooper you’ve experienced during a show?
When I was younger I let go of my lamb in the ring at a Texas Major, that was embarrassing.
