We caught up with Mr. Cal Sidwell, exhibitor of the Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2023 Colorado State Fair. Learn a little more about Cal below!

Age: 17

Grade: 11th

How do you stay focused on reaching your goal?
I keep my goals in mind daily as I work with my animals.

Do you show any other species besides sheep? If so, what other species?
I also show steers.

What’s your favorite show? and why?
Louisville, because I remember showing there the first time when I was 7. It’s a cool atmosphere that everyone should try to experience at some point. And the Colorado State Fair because I’ve been there every year of my life. Plus it has the best dairy bar anywhere.

What do you do to celebrate after a big win?
Relax with my family and have a good meal. And, if it’s at the State Fair, have ice cream. But we do that when we’re 3rd too!

What has showing livestock taught you?
Responsibility, and when things don’t go as planned, move on to the next one and keep working to improve.  Congratulate those that had their day because when it’s your turn, you hope others will do the same.

What’s your biggest dream?
End my show career with a bang and help the kids that follow.  And hopefully have a successful college wrestling career.

What’s your lambs name? and what made him/her so special?
My lamb’s name was “Unit.”  I gave it to him when he was about 2 weeks old.  We had a great jackpot run leading up to State Fair. He was always a fun one to have a hold of in the ring. I’ll never forget him.

Who do you look up to?
God, my parents, my brother, myself in 10 years.
