What is “nonnegotiable” for you when judging good livestock?
First probably presence, if I am not immediately impressed by them it’s going to be hard to sort to the top end. After that back shape and width progression.
What is your favorite part about working with the next generation of young people?
This industry has done a lot for me and my family, so, It’s cool to see the next generations growing up the same way I did. I know they will be able to accomplish anything they want with the tools the show world instills in them.
What is your best piece of advice for someone looking to pursue a judging career?
When you get in the ring, Just do what you want. There will be tons of outside noise, but you just have to tune it out.
Biggest showmanship pet peeve?
Halters, I understand certain situations require them but as a whole they are being used as a crutch for sheep that aren’t built right in their neck and shoulder.
Do you prefer to judge on the profile or on the walk?
I like to see them moving.
If judges had a walkup song, what would yours be?
Never thought about that, I’ll have to ask my kids.
Favorite show you have judged?
Probably have to go with Kansas City. It’s been a while and has changed a lot since I sorted it but it was a great time. Hope I can go back at some point.
Go-to road trip snack?
Dried Sausage, and a fountain coke.
What impression do you hope to leave on the crowd and exhibitors when you exit the ring after judging?
They’ve did a honest job and gave every kid a fair look.
