We caught up with showmanship judge Maggie Amburgey before she steps “Inside the Ring” at the Ohio State Fair. We invite you to read our candid interview with Maggie below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Inside the Ring – Showmanship Edition.”

WHO GOT YOU INVOLVED IN THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY AND HOW?
I was born into a family that raised sheep, my sister showed, and I followed her lead. So like many others, this is an overgrown 4-H project that has always been my way of life. Showing sheep led to collegiate livestock judging at Black Hawk College and Oklahoma State University where I was a part of two very talented teams. From when I was 7yrs old at lamb camp, to 27 years old working in the industry, and raising sheep with my own family this industry has always filled my life with the best people from coast to coast and I’m so thankful for it!

WHAT IS A PET PEEVE YOU HAVE IN SHOWMANSHIP?
That’s a tough one. But I’d say in showmanship my biggest pet peeve is looking to the sideline for coaching. I believe showmanship is all about teamwork between you and your animal. It’s your job as a showman to present your animal the best to showcase their positive attributes, and in return the sheep to highlight your talents as a showman. If the homework is done at home, you should be prepared to face challenges and overcome them with your animal vs. looking to the sideline for direction. In showmanship it should be you, your sheep and the judge…nothing else should have your attention

ARE YOU A FIRST IMPRESSION JUDGE?

You never get the second chance to make a first impression. No doubt first impressions will always stick with me.

FAVORITE TYPE OF FOOD?
I’ve never met a pizza I didn’t like

DREAM VACATION?
Now that I’m a mom… a solo trip to the grocery store is considered a vacation. I’m not hard to please. Anyplace to step away from the hustle for a couple days to relax and recharge. Jordan if you’re reading this… the beach sounds nice.

COLLEGE OR PROFESSIONAL SPORTS?
College.. Go Pokes and Go Cats!

FAVORITE SHOW YOU HAVE JUDGED?
I’m going to beat the system and say I’ll judge my favorite one soon. Growing up in Ohio, State Fair Showmanship was always one of my big goals as a showman and something I’m still passionate about. THE Ohio State Fair is my home, and a very prestigious place to me. When I stepped out of the ring for the last time in Columbus, I never imagined that 9 years later I’d get the opportunity to step in it again and be the one behind the mic. I’m excited and honored to get to sort the best kids in the game.
