We caught up with showmanship judge Kyla Mennen before she steps “Inside the Ring” at the Aksarben Stock Show. We invite you to read our candid interview with Kyla below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Inside the Ring – Showmanship Edition.”
Who first encouraged you to step into the ring as a judge?
My first encouragement came from my 4-H judging coach, Ricky Burns. I didn’t have parents that judged, but he was a close family friend that pushed me and my siblings into judging. Watching him judge shows gave me the inspiration to want to myself.
Do you have a “pre-show ritual” or way you get in the right mindset before walking into the ring?
Kind of. I wouldn’t quite phrase it as a “pre-show ritual” but before every show you can catch me with a gas station Diet Dr. Pepper and listening to Megan Thee Stallion calming my nerves and getting into the right headspace.
What’s one lesson showing livestock taught you that you still use today?
The one message that still resonates with me is that it’s not about how you start, but how you finish. It doesn’t matter if the beginning is rocky, keeping pushing through the obstacles to accomplish your goals. Perseverance is key, not only in showing or judging, but in life.
What’s the very first thing you notice when an animal/exhibitor enters the ring?
The first thing I notice is the exhibitor’s body language. It can reveal a lot about their confidence and drive to win. It goes beyond the look on their face. The look in their eyes, their posture, or the way they hold their shoulders or chest reveals how much that exhibitor wants to win.
One word or a short phrase you’d use to describe your judging style?
Efficient
