We caught up with Jordan Amburgey before he steps “Inside the Ring” at the 2026 California State Fair. Learn more about Jordan below…

What is “nonnegotiable” for you when judging good livestock?
I’ll always hang my hat on this: lions need to look like lions, and show winners need to look like show winners.

The ones that separate themselves are the ones that can be special in several areas without giving anything up in the process.

What is your favorite part about working with the next generation of young people?
Helping young people discover just how much this industry has to offer. If we can make their experience positive, challenge them, and give them opportunities to grow, there’s a much better chance they’ll stay involved and one day give back to the industry that invested in them.

What is your best piece of advice for someone looking to pursue a judging career?
The “right” way will always be up for debate. Your way shouldn’t be.

Biggest showmanship pet peeve?
Halters and bad attitudes.

Do you prefer to judge on the profile or on the walk?
Once we’ve established they have large muscles, and have genuine width, those two viewpoints become equally important. The profile reveals what makes them unique, and their movement confirms they didn’t sacrifice the fundamentals to get there.

Favorite show you have judged?
2023 National Western & 2015 Illinois State Fair

If judges had a walkup song, what would yours be?
We’re Going On A Bear Hunt- The Wiggles

Go-to road trip snack?
Lately, I’ve been on a trail mix kick. As far as hydration, it’s usually an unhealthy mix of water and caffeine.

What impression do you hope to leave on the crowd and exhibitors when you exit the ring after judging?
This is a sport built on opinions. At the end of the day, I hope the crowd and exhibitors leave with clarity, knowing every decision was made with conviction, consistency, and class.
