We caught up with Mr. Jimmy Davis before he steps “Inside the Ring” at the 2025 Arizona National Livestock Show. Get to know Jimmy below!
Who first encouraged you to step into the ring as a judge?
I had a couple of ag teachers who trusted me to judge some small shows my first year of teaching.
Do you have a “pre-show ritual” or way you get in the right mindset before walking into the ring?
First, I pray for everyone involved with the show, next, breakfast and coffee, and then some good music on the way to the show. And then more coffee.
What’s one lesson showing livestock taught you that you still use today?
To work hard. If you’re winning, you have to work hard to keep things rolling. If you’re not winning, you have to work even harder to get better.
What’s the very first thing you notice when an animal/exhibitor enters the ring?
Preparation. A confident showman and a well fitted/presented animal is a tough combination.
One word or a short phrase you’d use to describe your judging style?
I’m a structure guy.
