We caught up with judge Jeff Ripley before he steps “Inside the Ring” to sort the Ewe Show at the Wyoming State Fair. Learn more about Jeff below…
How do you stay up to date with changing trends without changing your judging style?
I’ve never really been a trend chaser. I believe that quality in livestock has been fairly constant over the years. While some things change, the fundamentals of skeletal design, muscularity, productivity and balance have remained the focus. However, as I look back at pictures of my kids with winning stock from 10 or more years ago, there is no doubt that change has occurred. As a breeder of competitive show stock, I try to focus on those characteristics that improve functionality of females while still raising quality offspring. It is a balancing act for sure.
What is your favorite trend in the show ring?
I probably appreciate that we are using stock with more body and rib than we did a few years ago. I believe these are more functional in the production world and still look great in the show ring.
What is one of the most memorable moments in your judging career?
There have been so many great experiences in my judging career. There was young man who was showing in a walking boot at a county fair a few years ago. When I asked him if it was a football injury, he informed me it was a shark attack. .Turns out it was true and it had been all over the news a few weeks prior. Tough kid!
There have been so many great interactions with young people over the years, that is what makes this so much fun for me.
What piece of advice do you give showman in today’s world?
Work hard and learn something new every time you leave the barn with your animals. Don’t get caught up in jealousy of those who win, learn from them, work hard and try to compete with them next time.
