We caught up with judge Jara Settles before she steps “Inside the Ring” to sort the Jackpot Ewe Show Show at the Ohio State Fair. Learn more about Jara below…
How do you stay up to date with changing trends without changing your judging style?
I think staying current and being aware of where opportunities for genetic improvement lie are probably more important to me than monitoring trends, both as a judge and as a breeder. Regardless of the species or what fads might be in vogue, there has to be a commitment to prioritizing fundamentals and I think coming to the show ring with the perspective of a breeder helps me hold true to that approach.
What is your favorite trend in the show ring?
Goodness knows I can’t say halters or flank wool… IYKYK. Jokes aside, I suppose my childhood spent in a cooler room made me a pretty big appreciator of the hard work and genetics that result in a set of fluffy legs.
What is one of the most memorable moments in your judging career?
Judging the Indiana State Fair ewe show with my husband, Barrett, was a really special experience. Having quality representatives of over twenty different breeds out on the floor of the big arena for supreme selection is something I’ll always remember.
What piece of advice do you give showman in today’s world?
Three pieces of advice: 1) The sheep don’t lie. If you put in the work or don’t, they’ll tell the story. 2) Wear sunscreen. Every day. You’ll thank me when you’re older. 3) Surround yourself with worthwhile people. If you spend time with four successful people, you’ll soon be the fifth. The opposite also holds true.
