What is “nonnegotiable” for you when judging good livestock?
Structural integrity, rib cage and underline quality with muscle shape, good loin edges and good back legs.
What is your favorite part about working with the next generation of young people?
It’s always good working with youth in agriculture. There are so many avenues that they can become successful in. I like to try to figure out which exhibitor looks to have the “fire and desire” to become a successful breeder.
What is your best piece of advice for someone looking to pursue a judging career?
Just find the kind you like, be consistent and describe them to the best of your ability.
Biggest showmanship pet peeve?
Continually tapping their backs, becomes a distraction. Not a fan of belly wool!
Do you prefer to judge on the profile or on the walk?
Definitely on the walk, the good built ones rise to the top real quick.
Favorite show you have judged?
Southwest district Show in Oklahoma for sheep and the Ft Worth Stock Show for cattle
Go-to road trip snack?
Dr Pepper and snickers
What impression do you hope to leave on the crowd and exhibitors when you exit the ring after judging?
That every exhibitor got their sheep looked at and evaluated. And everyone could understand why they placed where they placed.
