Clay Burson

We caught up with Clay Burson before he steps “Inside the Ring” at the 2026 Georgia National Fair. Learn more about Clay below…

What is “nonnegotiable” for you when judging good livestock?
Ring presence, structural quality, honest composition, and genuine width.

What is your favorite part about working with the next generation of young people?
I’m honored to be afforded the opportunity to give back to an industry that helped shape my personal development. If I am able to make any kind of small impact on a junior exhibitor’s life, I consider it a successful day.

What is your best piece of advice for someone looking to pursue a judging career?
Never stop working to refine your craft. After judging a show, think critically about where you excelled and where you could have potentially made improvements.

Biggest showmanship pet peeve?
I don’t like to see exhibitors slapping on their sheep or being overly aggressive in the ring.

Do you prefer to judge on the profile or on the walk?
I prefer to study livestock in motion.

If judges had a walkup song, what would yours be?
Mount Everest – Labrinth

Favorite show you have judged?
I enjoyed judging the market lambs at San Angelo.

Go-to road trip snack?
Topo Chico and beef jerky

What impression do you hope to leave on the crowd and exhibitors when you exit the ring after judging?
My first goal is always to treat all exhibitors with kindness and respect. Secondly, I will focus on delivering a fair and honest evaluation of the livestock.
