What is “nonnegotiable” for you when judging good livestock?
Good livestock can come in many different shapes and sizes. For me, a nonnegotiable is balance. I want sheep that possess an attractive look from the side, while still maintaining some muscularity.
What is your favorite part about working with the next generation of young people?
I love seeing kids take pride in their projects. Showing livestock is hard and seeing kids put in the work and accomplish their goals is something I really enjoy.
What is your best piece of advice for someone looking to pursue a judging career?
Find mentors and ask questions. I didn’t judge in high school or college, so there’s more than one path to becoming a judge. Surround yourself with experienced people you can learn from and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Most importantly, be positive and encouraging. Focusing only on an animal’s faults can discourage exhibitors. Look for the strengths in every animal and every showman.
Biggest showmanship pet peeve?
Slapping the animal. I understand signaling for a sheep to brace, but I truly don’t like an aggressive slap.
Do you prefer to judge on the profile or on the walk?
On the walk. A good showman can hide flaws when you get them propped up on the profile, but when we get them in motion, that’s when flaws will start to show.
Favorite show you have judged?
Sorting the showmanship at NAILE a few years ago was a lot of fun!
If judges had a walkup song, what would yours be?
YEAH! By Usher is a jam.
Go-to road trip snack?
Lifesaver gummies and a Dr Pepper!
What impression do you hope to leave on the crowd and exhibitors when you exit the ring after judging?
I want to be positive and encouraging toward every exhibitor who enters the ring. While showmanship is subjective, I hope every kid leaves proud of their hard work, regardless of where they place. Every exhibitor should know their effort and dedication is valued.
