Bart Cardwell

We caught up with Bart Cardwell before he steps “Inside the Ring” at the 2026 The Show Reno. Learn more about Bart below…

What is “nonnegotiable” for you when judging good livestock?
Skeletal structure

What is your favorite part about working with the next generation of young people?
I love seeing youth that are all IN when it comes to competing and showing livestock. This industry we work in is a great way to teach the next generation about critical thinking, work ethic and integrity.  So maybe its more than just one thing – its the whole process.

What is your best piece of advice for someone looking to pursue a judging career?
Know what you like, defend it to the best of your ability and evaluate how you did after it is all over.  Make necessary changes if you are wrong.

Biggest showmanship pet peeve?
The proper head placement of the sheep.  It all starts there.

Do you prefer to judge on the profile or on the walk?
Both are necessary to evaluate the animal.  But I love an animal that looks just as good in motion as it does when it is parked.

If judges had a walkup song, what would yours be?
Old Time Rock and Roll – Bob Seger

Favorite show you have judged?
Hard to beat NAILE.

Go-to road trip snack?
Hard Times Beef Jerky – Made in Oklahoma
Sunflower Seeds

What impression do you hope to leave on the crowd and exhibitors when you exit the ring after judging?
That I gave you my unwavering, honest opinion of what I like to use for a winner at a show.
