Ashlyn O’Brien

We caught up with showmanship judge Ashlyn O’Brien before she steps “Inside the Ring” at the 2025 American Royal. We invite you to read our candid interview with Ashlyn below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Inside the Ring – Showmanship Edition.”

Who first encouraged you to step into the ring as a judge?
My junior college coach, Taylor Frank, was a big part of developing my passion for judging. He not only pushed my teammates and I to be successful at contests but also to be better people and give back to the industry.

Do you have a “pre-show ritual” or way you get in the right mindset before walking into the ring?
Sort of. While I tame my Afro in the morning, I like to watch “the office” to chill the nerves. Then find a gas station for a sweet tea and granola bar.

What’s one lesson showing livestock taught you that you still use today?
Today I still carry the value of perseverance. Working with animals doesn’t give you instant results. You have to show up every single day—early mornings, late nights, no matter the weather—putting in the work even when no one’s watching. It taught me that hard work and consistency matter more than anything. That mindset is something I’ve taken with me into my new career.

What’s the very first thing you notice when an animal/exhibitor enters the ring?
A good first impression in the ring is one of the most important moments- I always notice and love seeing the intensity and care that a showman has on their face. I want to be able to see in that moment how hard they worked at home.
