Andrew Sloan

We caught up with showmanship judge Andrew Sloan before he steps “Inside the Ring” at the American Royal Spring Youth Livestock Show. We invite you to read our candid interview with Andrew below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Inside the Ring – Showmanship Edition.”

What qualities do you look for when judging?
Someone gets them set up in a timely manner. I want them to work to keep their animal looking the best they can, but be silent but deadly. I prefer no halters, particularly in older kids.

What showmanship competition is on your bucket list to judge?
Anytime I get to be in the show ring I am going to take the opportunity and run with it. I would really like to judge at the Oklahoma Youth Expo, National Western Stock Show, or NAILE. I am fortunate enough to mark one off at Kansas City this week.

What age division is the hardest to judge? Why?
I think each division is tough in its own regards. I personally think the younger division is typically the hardest.

Do you like to ask questions? If so why or why not?
I will be interactive with them, but won’t be asking them anything too hard. Because I like to let the kids show and let their showing ability sort themselves.

If you could pick one person to judge showmanship with you, who would it be and why?
Kailen Urban, who many know as Sister. Because she is the most passionate person I know about showmanship.

Did you compete in showmanship as an exhibitor? If so, how do your experiences affect you today?
Yes I definitely had my fair share of showing in showmanships. It makes me really appreciate the high quality of showmen, because it is a lot harder than it looks.
