We caught up with the breeder of the Grand Champion Commercial Ewe at the 2025 New Mexico State Fair. We invite you to read our candid interview with Winn Show Lambs below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Breeder Spotlight.”
What’s the pedigree of your champion?
Tres Amigos X Mr. Majestic
What are your long-term goals as a breeder?
If warranted, trends can be implemented, but we will continue to stick with 3 dimensional lambs that are muscular with a high degree of skeletal quality.
Was there a moment when you almost gave up? What made you push through?
Of course, just like any successful operation there are going to be setbacks, but we didn’t start this operation to give up when challenges were presented.
What’s something you’ve changed your mind about over the years?
Marketing. After being in this game for the last 35 years – social media and online sales have clearly changed the game.
If you could rebuild your herd/flock from scratch, what would you do differently?
Nothing, building a successful operation is the process of trial and error and Lord knows we have had our fair share.
What trait do you wish you had focused on sooner in your program?
Realizing there is a genetic component tied to the ewes that will be successful in an embryo production and transfer process.
Is there a breeding decision you’re especially proud of — or one you regret?
The implementation of AI and ET into our flock has been one thing we have truly enjoyed diving into, and it has certainly sped up the process of advancing our genetics.
What’s your favorite state fair — and why?
We have been fortunate to attend many over the years, and we just enjoy seeing the competition at each.
Is there anything you wish you had known when you started breeding?
Not in particular. Every breeding and lambing season brings challenges, but you need to remain tough to stay in this business.
What’s next — any big goals or projects in the works?
Just stay on track and keep producing livestock young people can be successful with.
