We caught up with the breeder of the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair. We invite you to read our candid interview with Williams Family Club Lambs below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Breeder Spotlight.”
What’s the pedigree of your champion?
Gorilla x Shrapnel x Bush League
What makes your operation run smoothly?
It is a family effort. My brother and I showed competitively for many years when we were in school and decided we wanted to start raising our own lambs. Since we started raising lambs it has been a family affair between my parents, brother, and I and now our families.
How many head do you run?
Between the two locations we have approximately 70 head of ewes
Do you have another job besides raising sheep? If so, what’s your occupation?
Yes, I am the Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance for Seaboard Foods in Guymon, OK. Seaboard Foods is a pork processing company that harvests approximately 21,000 hogs per day and employs approximately 2,100 employees.
In your opinion, who has been the most influential ram across the industry?
My personal opinion would be Unicorn of Allen/Newcomb Club Lambs. Unicorn is still siring lambs after all of these years that continue to make it to the winners circle in addition to the vast amount of ram lambs that he has sired and are being used across the industry.
What’s your favorite livestock show?
The Kansas State Fair has always been a favorite as it was the state fair where we grew up showing, but at a national level I would have to say the National Western Stockshow.
Do you prefer online sales or live sales?
Live sales because we enjoy the opportunity to meet potential buyers face to face. We also really enjoy getting to hang out and elaborate with other breeders and friends.
