We caught up with the breeder of the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2024 Tulsa State Fair. We invite you to read our candid interview with Skidgel Club Lambs below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Breeder Spotlight.”
What’s the pedigree of your champion?
2.0 x Donor DG700( Dirty Grandpa)
What is one thing you still want to accomplish as a breeder?
We’ve been very fortunate over the years to have some incredible showmen and feeders that have garnered banners at majors and state fairs from coast to coast. Blake came close to winning Denver a few years ago with one we raised and it has always been a goal of mine to have the Grand at the National Western.
Favorite show ring trend?
Not sure I have a favorite trend. I appreciate a judge that sorts a show for muscle, balance and ring presence and the not color of their leg wool.
Favorite industry sire of all time?
Totally impossible question to easily answer. There’s been so many influential bucks in the industry since we’ve been involved. However, if I have to pick a current one I’m gonna go with the one that has our genetics on the bottom side and that is Unicorn. Easily the most used buck in the last 5 years that still continues to have winners.
Most influential female in your flock? Why?
Most influential female is Tonic 593. She raised two major winners in her first two lamb crops. Baylor Newcomb’s Grand at OYE and in her second season she raised Cooper Newcombs Reserve Grand Champion whether at the American Royal. In her third lamb crop she had another single buck lamb and he remained intact and we called him Crip. I took for granted how important she was in helping solidify us in the club lamb industry.
Favorite show animal you’ve ever seen?
Not a clue which one is my favorite because there’s been so many sheep that I’ve seen that I fell in love with and thought they were very deserving of winning but my favorite sheep to come out of our barn was raised by BJ Wright and unfortunately he didn’t even win his class.
