We caught up with the breeder of the Grand Champion Ewe at the 2023 Arkansas Youth Expo. We invite you to read our candid interview with Maye Club Lambs below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Breeder Spotlight.”
What’s the pedigree of your champion?
The Grand Ewe at AYE is out of Honcho(Bombshell son) on a Bust a Move daughter. The Reserve Grand Market Lamb at State Fair is out of Tonto on a Specimen daughter that was the Grand Champion Market Lamb at the AR State Fair in 2016.
What makes your operation run smoothly?
I’m not sure it runs very smoothly! I am a one man show most of the time at the farm these days. It can get pretty wild during lambing season! I don’t get much sleep, to say the least. My teaching partner and former student, Chase McCormick, has been a huge help with whatever needs to be done or whenever I need assistance.
How many head do you run?
I try to stay around 60-70 head of ewes.
Do you have another job besides raising sheep? If so, what’s your occupation?
I am one of three Agriculture Education teachers at Mena High School.
In your opinion, who has been the most influential ram across the industry?
Drop the Mic
What’s your favorite livestock show?
Although I haven’t got to get out much other than judging some shows in the last several years, I have always enjoyed the American Royal. I love the laid back atmosphere and the great facilities.
Do you prefer online sales or live sales?
I have done both but prefer private treaty when selling lambs. As far as purchasing, I had rather go to the farm or a live sale. I hate staying on the computer half the night trying to buy one to no prevail!
