Jimmy Davis Family

We caught up with the breeder of the Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2023 San Antonio Stock Show. We invite you to read our candid interview with Jimmy Davis Family below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Breeder Spotlight.”

Who had the biggest influence on you to start your own herd?
My brother, Jeff Davis, started raising sheep a few years before I started, and really sparked my interest as a livestock breeder. My buddy, Joe Harrell, has always kept me motivated to try and make them the best I can.

First buck you can remember you bred to:
MLF 33 Tw. He was a ram my brother bought at the Black and White Sale back in the mid 70’s. He was bred by Monte Forster from Oregon.

Favorite ewe? Why?
0020 for several reasons. 1. She’s really good. 2. She raised the grand at San Antonio. 3. She was raised by my late buddy, Scotty Reed.

Growing up what did you think your occupation would be?
Ag. Teacher

Are you still on the farm or buildings that you started raising sheep in? If not, when and why did you decide to move?
No. I grew up in Sweetwater, Oklahoma but after I graduated from college, I moved to our current location of Walters, Oklahoma.

What has been the scariest decision for your operation?
All important decisions can be scary. Using a first time ram, investing in breeding stock, putting up new buildings, having online sales, going to live sales.

If you could add one thing to your operation, what would it be and why?
More barns. Seems like we never have enough space.
