We caught up with the breeder of the Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2025 Colorado State Fair. We invite you to read our candid interview with Frink Show Lambs below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Breeder Spotlight.”
What’s the pedigree of your champion?
Different League x Frink 0015 (Write it Down x Package Man)
What are your long-term goals as a breeder?
Continue to breed the type of sheep we like. To place emphasis on foundation females first to make high end wethers for young people to show. Ultimately to produce competitive livestock that kids can use as tools to grow and develop throughout their careers.
Was there a moment when you almost gave up? What made you push through?
Not just yet! We have been doing this for over 30 years having won our first Colorado State Fair 27 years ago. We enjoy doing this as a family while helping other families succeed.
What’s something you’ve changed your mind about over the years?
How to take care of our ewes. With the evolving embryo and AI technology it’s a challenge to get these ewes bred and settled. Not like it used to be to just turn out bucks and see who marks in the next 45 days.
If you could rebuild your herd/flock from scratch, what would you do differently?
Originally as young people starting out we utilized old show ewes to start and since then we have focused on making the kind of sheep we like, we wouldn’t change much about how we started.
What trait do you wish you had focused on sooner in your program?
We have focused on structural build and skeletal correctness we like good looking sheep that are wide and stout enough. We have tried to make sheep that catch a judges eye when they walk in.
Is there a breeding decision you’re especially proud of — or one you regret?
At selling time there are always some regrets but you hope most of the time you are proud of the ones you have. It’s a lot easier selling ones we like verses ones we don’t.
What’s your favorite state fair — and why?
We are partial to the Colorado State Fair only because it’s our home state fair. We had a lot of successes there both in sheep we have sold as well as the ones our girls showed.
Is there anything you wish you had known when you started breeding?
That we have to continue to improve our flock by keeping the big picture in mind while working on the little things that make you better.
What’s next — any big goals or projects in the works?
Just trying to keep up.
