We caught up with the breeder of the Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2025 State Fair of Texas. We invite you to read our candid interview with Fletcher Flynn below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Breeder Spotlight.”
What’s the pedigree of your champion?
Griddy x Superfly
What are your long-term goals as a breeder?
We are aiming to raising high-quality livestock, meet new people, and serve our customers with care and integrity.
Was there a moment when you almost gave up? What made you push through?
Yes, especially during the winter months, lying out in the barn at 2:00 a.m., I often asked myself why I do this. But what kept me going was my competitive nature and goal to have a lamb win a big show.
What’s something you’ve changed your mind about over the years?
I used to think that having a large number of ewes was the key to breeding quality sheep. But over the years, I’ve learned that success isn’t about quantity it’s about the quality of the ewes you have.
If you could rebuild your herd/flock from scratch, what would you do differently?
Nothing really, I am happy with what I have.
What trait do you wish you had focused on sooner in your program?
Getting out and going to live sales sooner and to meet more people.
Is there a breeding decision you’re especially proud of — or one you regret?
I am proud that breed to Griddy to make this lamb and several other good ones this year.
What’s your favorite state fair — and why?
Iowa – I’ve been going to the Iowa State Fair ever since I was a little kid. Now, it’s become a family tradition. We camp together, show and sell our lambs, and make it our summer vacation, it’s something we look forward to every year.
Is there anything you wish you had known when you started breeding?
I didn’t know much, I was a young kid and learned on the fly from other breeders and friends.
What’s next — any big goals or projects in the works?
Striving to make our stock the best we can.
