Asmus Club Lambs

We caught up with the breeder of the Reserve Champion Market Lamb and Reserve Champion Wether Dam at the 2026 California State Fair and the Supreme Champion Breeding Ewe at the 2026 California Youth Ag Expo. We invite you to read our candid interview with Asmus Club Lambs below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Breeder Spotlight.”

What’s the pedigree of your champion?
Wether is Navajo x Big City
Ewe is Chief x Hammer

How many years have you been raising sheep?
Way too long. Started in college so about 25 years. We made a big push in the last 8 years, once our kids started showing

What excites you the most about raising show stock?
It’s a gamble, basically every part of it.  Because the odds are usually not in your favor we have become early adopters of new technology to increase the odds.  We play with IVF, new ingredients and animal health products and steal ideas from other industries. There is a lot to perfect still.  That excites me.

What is your favorite animal on your farm?
Brittney. She’s the full sib to the CYAE supreme female and did her share of winning last year.  She’s one of the few who has a  personality, and has since she was born.

What is one lesson that you have learned while raising sheep that has changed your perspective over time?
It’s gonna suck sometimes. Those bad times happen and you learn to adapt and move on. The good times stand out and make it worth it. It applies to sheep and life.

Where would you like to see your operation go in the next 5 – 10 years?
Right now we are focused on making the best ones we can for our kids to show. In 5 years they will be done. Right now we are so focused on the current that I haven’t figured out what’s next.
