We caught up with Breeding Sheep and Showmanship judge, Nate Brookshire, before he steps “Inside the Ring” at the 2026 Arkansas Youth Expo. Learn more about Nate below…
What is “nonnegotiable” for you when judging good livestock?
They’ve got to be good looking and athletic.
What is your favorite part about working with the next generation of young people?
I love the smiles, the high fives, and the interaction with the next generation, but the opportunity to give back to the industry that has done so much for me is probably my favorite part.
What is your best piece of advice for someone looking to pursue a judging career?
Take every opportunity. Judge each show like it’s your last. Be strong in your character. Highlight the exhibitors. Be grateful for the chance
Biggest showmanship pet peeve?
I like when showmen learn the lay of the land before they go in. Keeps the mojo flowing a bit better.
Do you prefer to judge on the profile or on the walk?
On the go.
Favorite show you have judged?
Man, that’s a tough one. Pistol Pete probably had the best grand drive I have ever had the opportunity to assemble. Kentucky State Fair’s market lamb grand drive was electric. The Show in Reno I got to sort with Connor Brew, who is a good friend that I have always looked up to. Only time you’ll hear me be indecisive.
If judges had a walkup song, what would yours be?
Till I Collapse – Eminem.
Go-to road trip snack?
Pepsi, Snickers, and a beef stick.
What impression do you hope to leave on the crowd and exhibitors when you exit the ring after judging?
My goal as an evaluator is to judge the stock as I see them, and to articulate what I see to the best of my ability on the mic. I hope that I am easy to follow, and that I can provide a positive experience for the kids in the ring.
