We caught up with the breeder of the Reserve Champion Wether Dam at the 2025 Minnesota Youth Livestock Expo. We invite you to read our candid interview with CJ Club Lambs below and please continue to check back often for our next edition of “Breeder Spotlight.”
What’s the pedigree of your champion?
Sired by: Tres Amigos
Dam: Barbie Donor (How High x Unicorn)
What are your long-term goals as a breeder?
Producing functional, high-quality breeding stock and purple ribbon caliber wethers
Was there a moment when you almost gave up? What made you push through?
Every lambing season there is a moment of sleep deprivation paired with livestock challenges. A good nights sleep and a cup of coffee seems to make the world a little brighter.
What’s something you’ve changed your mind about over the years?
My dream barn design is always changing.
If you could rebuild your herd/flock from scratch, what would you do differently?
We raised a ram lamb “Cadillac” that I wish I would’ve better utilized while he was in our program.
What trait do you wish you had focused on sooner in your program?
Livestock that are athletic and attractive while loose in the pen. Good livestock is more fun to look at than bad livestock when doing chores.
Is there a breeding decision you’re especially proud of — or one you regret?
How High worked really well on our flock, especially the (How High x Unicorn) mating.
What’s your favorite state fair — and why?
Minnesota State Fair is the best State Fair. Many great memories and long standing family traditions. Looking forward to our son joining us for his first Minnesota State Fair this year.
Is there anything you wish you had known when you started breeding?
Working tub is one of the best investments we’ve made!
What’s next — any big goals or projects in the works?
Barn remodel.
