Your online source for the show lamb industry.

We caught up with Ms. Nora Hoge, exhibitor of the Grand Champion Market Lamb at the 2024 Illinois State Fair. Learn a little more about Nora below!

Tell us a little about your champion:
His name, Beast, says it all.  He has always been a beast.  From the first time I saw him it instantly became his name.  I thought he was special and unique and couldn’t wait to show him at my first state fair.

What has showing livestock taught you?
Showing livestock has taught me many life skills.  One important thing I am learning is how to be responsible.  I have had to wake up early to do chores and have put my needs second to my sheep.  I have learned that livestock eats first and I eat second.  Going out to the barn every day takes discipline.  Luckily I want to go to the barn every day and work with my livestock.  They bring me joy.

What has been your biggest obstacle you have overcome while showing?
Sadly at the state fair I was climbing over a pig gate and broke my arm.  I wasn’t able to show him and my big brother, Carter, stepped in and showed him for me.  Before Carter went into show Beast he said, “Thanks for all doing all the work for me.”

What’s your favorite part of a lamb show?
I enjoyed working at home on my animals all summer, it kept me busy and it was fun, but getting Illinois State Fair Grand Champion Market Lamb was the best feeling I have ever had.

What do you do to celebrate after a big win?
I celebrate by hanging out with the people that helped me work on my project.

Do you prefer to show wethers or does?
I prefer showing wethers because they are less crazy than does!

What’s your favorite show? and why?
The Illinois State Fair is my favorite because everyone from Illinois comes together to see who is the best of the best.

Who has been your biggest influence?
I have two big influencers!  My two older brothers, Carter and Nolan.  I have looked up to them since I was little and enjoyed going to all the shows and watching and cheering them on.  Now they push me to my very limits and want me to get better.
